What happened to seiyuu Ai Takabe after her 2015 arrest?
The former seiyuu survived an arrest, lost her career, and now thrives with her own business.
There are stories in Japan’s entertainment industry that seem like they were ripped from the darkest script of a drama, and Ai Takabe’s is definitely one of them. If you’ve been in this scene for years, you surely remember the huge media scandal that cost her her career. But few know the brutal twist her life took after hitting rock bottom.

Freefall and a brutal plot twist
Everything went downhill in October 2015 when the actress, then 27, was arrested in her Shibuya apartment. Police detained her on suspicion of possessing a small amount of illicit substances. By March 2016, prosecutors decided not to file formal charges, arguing that the amount of the substance was minimal and that the public humiliation she was already suffering was punishment enough. As expected in Japan’s strict culture, her agency dropped her and cut her contract, erasing her overnight.
However, amid all this legal chaos, Takabe met one of the lawyers handling her case, and sparks flew. They ended up marrying in 2017 and, to this day, maintain a very stable marriage. Away from the spotlight and drama, she is now a mother of two and is thriving with her own business in the beauty industry.

About Ai Takabe
In case you don’t know who she is or are new to the fandom, Takabe began her career as a gravure idol, shining in the All Japan National Beautiful Girl contest of 2004, before joining the group Bishoujo Club 31. By the late 2000s, she made the leap into voice acting, where her soft, warm tone made her extremely popular among otaku during that era.
Seeing how she rebuilt her life from scratch and moved forward after one of the most brutal cancellations in the industry, do you think Japanese studios are too extreme with their talents or simply applying the rules that apply?
