Japan runs out of children: Record number of women reject motherhood

A recent survey reveals that economic pressure and workplace burnout are sinking the birth rate in the Asian country.

6 April 2026

It seems the plot of those dystopian animes about a country running out of people is one step away from becoming a documentary. The demographic crisis in Japan has just reached a critical and alarming point. According to the latest data from a massive survey by Rohto Pharmaceutical, we are facing a record number that has the Japanese government sweating. It turns out that 64.7% of young single women, aged 18 to 29, have permanently shut the door to the idea of having children. For the first time in the history of this annual study, women have surpassed men in their total rejection of the idea of forming a family.

The 25-year barrier and the workplace nightmare

To understand this collapse, we must analyze what researchers dubbed the “25-year barrier.” The dynamic is brutally honest. Before that age, the idea of motherhood still sounds like a distant and manageable possibility. But once they cross that threshold and face the suffocating Japanese work culture, the fantasy shatters. Financial stress and the fear of ruining their professional development are the main culprits of this slowdown. In total, 62.6% of all young singles in that age range prefer to prioritize their financial survival over bringing someone into such an absorbing and costly system.

Misinformation and a bleak demographic future

Even the small percentage that plans to have offspring are delaying their plans as long as possible. The average age to seek a first child has now reached 31.3 years. The most frustrating part of the entire situation is the huge disconnect with the government. Over 60% of these young people don’t even know that government support programs for fertility tests and family matters exist. While politicians and major Japanese corporations panic, trying to devise strategies to save the birth rate, the new generation has made it crystal clear that they are unwilling to sacrifice their lives in an economy that offers no real stability.
