During a recent conversation with Famitsu, Level-5 chief executive Akihiro Hino shared insights into the company’s unique workplace atmosphere. Among these revelations was the practice of hosting “knowledge quizzes” centered on the company’s creations for staff members. Individuals who achieve top scores on these assessments are granted salary increases, irrespective of their tenure.
Although the precise figures were shared exclusively with Famitsu, the interviewers were taken aback by the amounts, and upon hearing Hino’s plans to raise them further, they noted that such sums could significantly boost employee morale.
Hino explained the reasoning behind this distinctive approach, stating that his game development experiences taught him the importance of entrusting tasks to those deeply familiar with the subject matter. “If someone lacks sufficient knowledge, other team members must assist or review their work,” he elaborated. “Conversely, those with strong knowledge can lead and optimize workflows. Essentially, I view a person’s understanding and enthusiasm for our games as a valuable skill,” he added. In response to the surprise over the salary hikes, Hino emphasized that the productivity gains Level-5 reaps far exceed the financial outlay.

Before you rush to submit your resume showcasing your Dark Cloud synthesis expertise, Hino clarified that Level-5 isn’t expanding its workforce indiscriminately. While the company is currently enlarging its Osaka facilities—one of its three main locations alongside its Fukuoka headquarters and Tokyo offices—it has grown more selective in hiring, prioritizing candidates who demonstrate not only talent and drive but also a genuine passion for gaming and Level-5’s properties. Hino, who now participates in the hiring process from the outset rather than just the final interviews, ensures new team members align with the company’s core values and abilities.
