Approximately a week ago, an indie developer working on the multiplayer social deduction game Red Flag shared their positive encounter with Valveโ€™s Steam Support on the IndieDev subreddit. The developer, a newcomer to game creation, had mistakenly uploaded a non-functional build on the deadline day for Steamโ€™s June Next Fest. Surprisingly, instead of requesting corrections or denying the submission, the Steam reviewers stepped in to fix the issues themselves, ensuring the game was ready in time for the event.

The Red Flag Team uploaded their demo build on the Next Fest deadline day, only to realize later that the typical approval process spans five to seven days. This oversight meant that unless the game was approved immediately, it would miss a crucial opportunity to gain visibility on Steam. After acknowledging their error and sending a follow-up email, they received confirmation that their game was being prioritized for an urgent review.

Although the build was approved within a few hours, Valve identified that the game failed to launch due to an improperly configured Visual C++ Redistributable files setup.

Rather than rejecting the build or sending it back to the developers for corrections (a standard part of the review process involves ensuring the build is executable), the reviewer opted to personally adjust the configuration and organize the redistributables before giving the game the green light.

In response to the Reddit post, numerous indie developers recounted similar incidents where Valve resolved redistributable issues for their games just before a deadline. It seems this is a frequent error among first-time Steam publishers, and the Valve team has become adept at addressing it without altering the buildโ€™s core.

Thanks to Valveโ€™s intervention, Red Flagโ€™s demo successfully participated in the June Next Fest. As a result, the gameโ€™s Steam Wishlists nearly doubled, and the developers have started seeing players joining their lobbies.

Red Flag is scheduled to launch in Early Access on July 14 for Windows (Steam). A free demo is also available for download.
