Starting July 15, 2026, China implemented strict national regulations that virtually eliminate AI companion services, completely banning virtual partners for those under 18 and requiring developers to remove any algorithm designed to foster emotional dependency among users.

Although this seems like a measure from a dystopian sci-fi movie, authorities have a clear reason for this digital purge. The country’s birth rate suffered its fourth consecutive annual drop in 2025, reaching historic lows. Officials fear that the deep attachment young people are developing to these waifus and cyber boyfriends will permanently push them away from real human relationships, further reducing the chances of new marriages. Under these new rules, any platform attempting to replace ordinary social interaction will be shut down mercilessly.

Facing the threat of severe fines and government reviews, major tech companies like Alibaba, ByteDance, and Tencent decided not to take risks and massively shut down their personalization and virtual romance features before the deadline. This sudden disconnection left thousands of users completely devastated. Social media was flooded with heart-wrenching farewell messages to their digital partners, with community members admitting that losing their chat companion after years of exchanging hundreds of thousands of messages felt exactly like losing a family member or lover in real life.
