True mecha fans have a new reason to get excited. The production committee behind the legendary franchise of giant robots dropped a huge announcement by officially announcing the animated adaptation of Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO. Through a spectacular first trailer, it was confirmed that this new series will premiere on screens in 2027, marking the start of a completely new universe separate from the classic timelines we all know.

The most interesting aspect of this new gem is its ambitious transmedia narrative. The anime is part of the massive “RG Project,” directly sharing its universe with the video game GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT revealed in mid-2026. The series will serve as a major prequel set 100 years before the game’s events, explaining how humanity had to leave Earth after losing control of alien technologies that created an aggressive ecosystem known as the Apocalypse. Here enters our protagonist, Ray Azumi, a war orphan who awakens in lunar colonies and is designated as the pilot of the experimental prototype Gundam ZERO.

A fresh reset for the Reiwa era

To bring this dark space epic to life, acclaimed director Kenji Kamiyama took the helm of the project under the studio SOLA ANIMATION and general production by Bandai Namco Filmworks. The director himself admitted that at first he was terrified at the idea of creating a Gundam concept from scratch without using classic elements like the Earth Federation or Newtypes, but ultimately accepted the challenge of designing a modern work for new generations. The technical aspects shine thanks to impeccable mechanical designs by Eiichi Shimizu and the masterful soundtrack by Go Shiina.
