Famous Japanese shrine bans cosplay for lack of respect

The iconic Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo has permanently banned cosplayers.

Visiting a Japanese shrine to take photos in your maid outfit or anime armor might seem like a great idea for gaining followers, but locals are no longer amused. The authorities of the iconic Yasukuni Shrine, located in the Chiyoda district of Tokyo, have issued an official statement that has come as a shock to many tourists and locals: starting August 7, entry is strictly prohibited for any visitor wearing cosplay or military attire.

To understand the context of this drastic measure, it’s important to remember that this Shinto site is not just a theme park. The place is dedicated to honoring the spirits of those who lost their lives in Japan’s wartime conflicts since the Meiji era. In past decades, it was common to see real veterans wearing their old uniforms to remember fallen comrades with deep respect. However, over time, newer generations began appearing in costume with foreign historical military uniforms or full fictional character outfits, turning a space of mourning and solemnity into a parade of costumes that ultimately offended regular visitors.

The final straw was the lack of common sense shown by those using these traditional spaces as personal photo studios. Through its website, the shrine made it clear that this new rule is not just for August commemorative dates but will be enforced permanently year-round. The goal is simple: to maintain the sanctity of the site so people can pay their respects in a calm atmosphere, asking the community to cooperate and understand the true peaceful purpose of the place.

As more temples and traditional areas in Japan implement strict restrictions against foreigners and content creators, do you think the government will eventually ban costumes in all historical sites to stop such disrespectful behavior?
