Kadokawa recently unveiled its financial performance for the initial quarter of the fiscal year (April to June 2026). The report indicates that Kadokawa recorded an operating deficit of 660 million yen (approximately $4.14 million USD) within its anime and live-service division.

It’s important to clarify that this deficit doesn’t reflect poor performance of Kadokawa’s anime productions. In fact, segment revenue for anime saw a 27.4% year-on-year increase, while live-service content experienced a 22.8% growth. The company specifically pointed to the robust global and domestic reception of anime series such as Re:Zero, Classroom of the Elite, and The Barbarian’s Bride.

Nonetheless, Kadokawa attributes the significant drop in segment-wide profitability to “the ongoing surge in anime production costs.” This trend has been prevalent in Japan’s anime industry lately, a phenomenon dubbed by Teikoku Databank as a “profitless boom,” where anime’s rising success and demand are offset by escalating production expenses, leading to diminished profit margins or outright losses for production houses.

IG Port, the parent entity of renowned studios Production I.G and Wit Studio, serves as another recent illustration of this issue, reporting an operating loss of about $8.22 million in its anime division for the fiscal year ending May 2026. The company similarly noted that while revenue climbed, it was overshadowed by soaring anime production costs, particularly those associated with labor, CGI, and outsourcing. In a similar vein, the studio behind Spy x Family, CloverWorks has faced expanding financial deficits over the last two fiscal years, and the same is true for studio SilverLink over the past three years.

Classroom of the Elite

Looking ahead, Kadokawa projects that the volume of anime titles it will be directly involved in, either as lead or co-producer, will rise starting from the second quarter, a development expected to further boost revenue. Additionally, the company’s anime division anticipates a reduction in expenditures by approximately 200 million yen ($1.25 million) from the upcoming quarter onward, a consequence of the voluntary workforce reductions Kadokawa implemented earlier this year.
