Is it love at first sight? The author of Re:Zero denies a translation error
Tappei Nagatsuki clarified that Subaru did not fall in love at first sight with Emilia in Re:Zero.
The emotional development of characters in fantasy stories is often key to connecting with readers, but poor translations can sometimes completely distort the creator’s intentions. The renowned author Tappei Nagatsuki, creator of the acclaimed franchise Re:Zero (Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu), stepped in to clarify the true nature of Subaru Natsuki‘s initial feelings toward Emilia, debunking a popular belief caused by an error in the English edition of the light novels.

For years, readers of the English translation of the third volume believed Subaru felt an instant crush upon meeting the silver-haired elf, as the Western text described the scene as “love at first sight.” However, Nagatsuki explained that in the original Japanese text, the reality is quite different. In the canonical writing, when Subaru loses his memories or interacts in the early stages with the heroine, he merely perceives her as an extremely attractive girl who perfectly matches his physical tastes, without any romantic attachment at that initial moment.

The writer emphasized that, although Subaru is the type to get attached quickly, in this story he needed to share real experiences and overcome critical moments to develop genuine affection. According to the author himself, the true emotional turning point where the protagonist first acknowledges being in love with Emilia occurs much later: during the iconic and moving scene where she allows him to rest his head in her lap. This clarification significantly changes the character’s background in the anime and written work, showing that his devotion was not born from a superficial whim but from the emotional impact of supporting each other amid tragedy.
Knowing Subaru’s love was built through deep experiences rather than an initial crush, do you think this author’s revelation makes his development with Emilia more valuable and interesting?
