When two of the industry’s most acclaimed and respected studios join forces for the first time, the result promises to be an unforgettable visual experience. Bandai Namco Filmworks presented a new promotional trailer for the animated adaptation of the manga Fool Night (Furu Naito), confirming that its premiere will take place globally via Netflix’s catalog on November 26.

This project marks the first official collaboration between the prestigious studios Sunrise and SHAFT, an unprecedented alliance that keeps expectations high. The series will be directed by Atsushi Yukawa, with Jin Tanaka overseeing the scripts and Robert Sato handling character design, while the soundtrack will be composed by the talented Tatsuya Kato.

The desperate struggle to preserve humanity

The story follows Toshiro Kamiya, a young man burdened by poverty who has reached his breaking point. With his mother seriously ill and a job that barely covers her medicine, Kamiya sees no other option than to undergo the “transfloration” process. This disturbing scientific procedure involves giving up one’s body in exchange for substantial compensation to gradually transform into vegetation, exploring the darkest corners of a society where empathy is fading.

• Minako Kotobuki as Yomiko Horai.

About Fool Night

The original manga, written and illustrated by Kasumi Yasuda, began serialization in Shogakukan’s Big Comic Superior magazine in November 2020. Thanks to its oppressive atmosphere and powerful social critique, this true gem of the genre quickly gained popularity, reaching 12th place on the male readers’ list of the prestigious guide Kono Manga ga Sugoi! in 2023.

With such a dark premise exploring human despair and the sacrifice of one’s body, do you think the partnership between Sunrise and SHAFT will cement Fool Night as one of the most impactful anime of the year?
