It’s normal to admire a public figure, but stalking them to their hotel door or waiting for them in airport halls crosses the line of respect. Singer, presenter, and seiyuu Shoko Nakagawa, affectionately known as Shokotan, had to issue a direct warning through her representatives to stop some fans’ invasive behavior during her travels.

Through an open letter published this Friday, Nakagawa’s team thanked the public’s constant support but made it clear that the artist’s safety is the top priority. The message kindly asks fans to refrain from camping outside event venues, waiting for her at train stations or airports, chasing her vehicles, or going near her accommodation and private residence.

The request isn’t just about privacy. The artist, who gave birth to twins in September 2025 and has balanced motherhood with her career in Japan’s entertainment industry, suffered a serious harassment incident in 2018. Back then, police arrested a man near her home after he ignored warnings and left threatening notes. That’s why her representatives insist on maintaining respect outside of public appearances to ensure official meetings remain safe for everyone.

Born in 1985, Shoko Nakagawa is one of Japan’s most versatile and beloved pop culture figures. Known as an illustrator, cosplayer, TV host, and singer, Shokotan is remembered for iconic theme songs in various anime series and voicing characters in the Sailor Moon franchise. Her closeness to fans has always been a strength, so this call aims to protect that relationship without risking her or her family’s safety.

With ongoing debates about artists’ privacy at stations and airports, do you think agencies should take immediate legal action against those who stalk talents outside official events?
