Koei Tecmo’s studio Gust has just announced the release date and a fresh trailer for Atelier Karia: The Night Kingdom & the Guide of Memories, the latest mainline installment in the enduring alchemy RPG series. The game is slated for launch on February 25, available on PC (Steam), PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, and Xbox Series X|S.
Taking place two years after the events of Atelier Yumia: The Alchemist of Memories & the Envisioned Land, Atelier Karia follows the tale of the amnesiac adventurer Karia. As the land’s mana gradually depletes, the continent of Aladiss confronts a crisis known as the Mana Withering. It is during this time that Karia stumbles upon the art of “alchemy,” igniting the new narrative. Atelier Karia serves as a mainline sequel to Atelier Yumia but is designed to be enjoyed as a standalone experience without prior familiarity with the series.
The trailer introduces two new characters integral to the game’s plot – Noelk Schreiber and Celes. Noelk is an inspector from the Eustellan Bureau of Alchemy Relic Control, tasked with enforcing alchemy regulations and reporting offenders. He is also a proficient archeologist skilled in decoding ancient texts. Celes, on the other hand, is a composed woman residing in a mansion within the underground world of Noctrem. She is adept at swordplay and martial arts, as well as cooking and tea brewing. Despite her reserved demeanor, she possesses a playful side.
The trailer also highlights the “Colossal Enemy” battles, where Karia and her companions must confront a massive creature in two distinct phases. In the Frontline Team Phase, the characters engage the Colossal Enemy directly, while in the Assault Team Phase, players maneuver characters across the battlefield, utilizing cannons and other mechanics to aid those in direct combat. These phases alternate, and if both teams achieve their objectives, they can substantially weaken the foe.
Among the new gameplay mechanics, Karia’s voracious appetite allows her to consume nearly anything, granting her special abilities when she eats certain items during battles or exploration. Depending on her diet, Karia can undergo a Style Change, altering both her appearance and abilities. For instance, the Ignis Style imbues all her skills with fire properties, boosts her attack power, and specializes in close-quarters combat. Conversely, the Mermaid Style excels at dealing ice damage from a distance.
