Eighteen years sound easy, but for the franchise that defined an entire generation of ecchi fans, the journey has been a real emotional rollercoaster. Legendary writer Ichiei Ishibumi, creator of High School DxD, used the 18th anniversary of his work’s launch to send an emotional thank-you message to fans who have supported him since day one, though the celebration came with a sincere apology for the lack of new chapters.

In his message published on September 20, the author expressed gratitude for the huge support the franchise still receives, and directly addressed the constant delays affecting his latest projects. Ishibumi explained that the long pauses in the main story and spin-offs are due to chronic health issues caused by accumulated overwork over the years.

Among the ailments slowing his writing pace are episodes of severe hypertension and complications in his cervical vertebrae, conditions that prevent him from spending long hours at his desk. Despite these physical challenges, the writer made it clear he hasn’t given up and is focused on recovery to slowly advance with Shin High School DxD novels and the short story collections he has pending.

Written by Ichiei Ishibumi and illustrated by Miyama-Zero, the light novel series began publication in September 2008 under Fujimi Fantasia Bunko by Fujimi Shobo, concluding its main arc in March 2018 with 25 volumes before launching its direct sequel. The plot follows Issei Hyodo, a perverted high school student who is killed on his first date and resurrected as a devil by the beautiful Rias Gremory. As the servant of the Gremory clan heir, Issei must learn to navigate among angels, fallen demons, and mythical creatures while pursuing his dream of becoming the harem king.
