Developer ENSAPIA Tokyo has revealed that its enduring MMORPG Chocotto Land will cease operations on March 29, 2027. This laid-back, pixel-art fantasy title for PC and mobile devices holds a special place in the hearts of many Japanese gamers as a cherished childhood memory. The game has maintained a remarkable 20-year run, having entered a “pre-launch phase” in 2006 before its official debut in 2007. Interestingly, the development team has not attributed the upcoming closure to financial difficulties.
Throughout its lengthy existence, Chocotto Land has undergone substantial transformations, featuring regular in-game events and updates. The developers have introduced new character classes, a job-change system, expanded maps, gameplay mechanics, and fresh adversaries, among other enhancements. Nevertheless, the recent announcement highlights that the game has long struggled with outdated infrastructure. Despite exploring potential solutions like transitioning to a new platform, the game’s internal architecture had become excessively convoluted due to years of updates, making such endeavors impractical. Consequently, ENSAPIA Tokyo concluded that sustaining operations was no longer viable, prompting the decision to terminate services. This news has left many Japanese players stunned.

It’s worth noting that Square Enix’s Dragon Quest of the Stars faced a similar outcome, shutting down in October 2025 after a decade of content updates. The developers also cited technical challenges stemming from the game’s aging and increasingly complex development environment as the primary cause for the shutdown. At that time, industry experts familiar with live-service mobile games suggested that accumulated technical debt, coupled with the impact of frequent staff turnover in gaming companies, were common issues faced by long-running titles, indicating that such cases might become more frequent in the future.
For Chocotto Land, the developers have outlined plans to launch a “memorial” website where players can revisit the game’s history, as well as a “memorial” app offering access to the game’s designs. The servers are scheduled to go offline permanently on March 29, 2027, at 10 AM (JST).
