Shanghai Alice Reprise has revealed that Touhou Koumakyou: New Classic – the Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, a reimagining of the 2002 bullet hell shooter, will be receiving a physical release for the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 on December 17. This news comes after a wave of requests from fans eager to own a physical copy of the game, which was initially made available digitally on September 9 for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and Windows (Steam).
The original creator of the game, ZUN, had initially no plans to produce physical copies. However, the “unprecedented” enthusiasm from fans prompted a change of heart, leading the development team to prepare physical editions ahead of the year’s end (via X).
The physical edition of Touhou Koumakyou: New Classic – the Embodiment of Scarlet Devil will feature reversible cover art reminiscent of the original 2002 release, character and bullet pattern stickers, a “Marisa’s Guide to Resolving Anomalies” booklet, and a download code for accessing the soundtrack player.

Similar to its digital counterpart, the physical version of Touhou Koumakyou: New Classic – the Embodiment of Scarlet Devil houses both the remake and the original game, with the latter known as “Touhou Koumakyou: Classic ~ The Embodiment of Scarlet Devil” (delivered via a download code). Although Touhou Koumakyou: Classic cannot be purchased separately, replays and save data from the original 2002 version (specifically Ver. 1.02H) can be transferred over to the Classic version.
Touhou Koumakyou: New Classic – the Embodiment of Scarlet Devil is available on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and Windows (Steam). The Classic version is exclusively in Japanese. Physical editions for the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 are scheduled for release on December 17.
