Tetsuya Chiba, legendary manga artist and creator of Ashita no Joe, passes away
The legendary artist suffered from myelodysplastic syndrome and passed away at 87.
News that strikes at the heart of Japanese pop culture history. The legendary manga artist Tetsuya Chiba, known worldwide for creating the unforgettable sports manga Ashita no Joe, died at 87 due to complications from myelodysplastic syndrome, a type of cancer affecting blood cells in the bone marrow.

Chiba had to pause the publication of his autobiographical work Hinemosu Notari Nikki in Big Comic magazine last September due to declining health. In recent years, he battled various medical issues, including heart surgery in 2022 for a stent, eye procedures, and treatments for a throat tumor. Despite these challenges, he remained active and connected with his audience as much as his health allowed.
Throughout his remarkable career, Chiba received Japan’s highest honors for creators. In 2022, he was nominated for the Japan Art Academy alongside Yoshiharu Tsuge, becoming one of the first manga creators to receive this distinction. He also served as president of the Japan Cartoonists Association and made history in 2024 by being awarded the Order of Culture, the first manga author ever to receive such a high honor from the Japanese government.

Ashita no Joe is one of the most influential works in manga and Japanese animation history. Written by Ikki Kajiwara and illustrated by Tetsuya Chiba, the story was serialized from 1968 to 1973, becoming a social phenomenon that transcended print to inspire a generation. The plot follows Joe Yabuki, a rebellious orphan from Tokyo’s slums who finds purpose and struggle in boxing.
The legacy of the work inspired two iconic TV anime adaptations in 1970 and 1980, as well as two feature films. Later, the series’ spirit was reimagined in a futuristic setting with the acclaimed Megalobox in 2018 and its sequel Megalobox 2: Nomad in 2021. Chiba’s work laid the foundation for modern sports manga, and his art style remains a cornerstone of the current industry.
