Death Stranding Isolations shows a disturbing trailer: «My mom became a crater»

Hideo Kojima’s world still has many disturbing stories to tell, and the next one will come in anime form. Kojima Productions released a new trailer for Death Stranding Isolations, along with a promotional image and more details about the story and production team. The series, which will use traditional 2D animation, is set to premiere on Disney+ in 2027.

The trailer was presented during a Kojima Productions 10th anniversary event in Japan, and this time it features a young woman who has decided to turn her back on humanity. Surviving in the world of Death Stranding was already difficult enough, and reconnecting people didn’t solve all their problems.

A story where loneliness is the protagonist

The new synopsis begins with a disturbing phrase: “My mom became a crater.” The young woman who says this lost her mother during the Death Stranding phenomenon, when contact between the living and the dead caused catastrophic explosions. Since then, she has lived completely isolated, becoming so accustomed to loneliness that she no longer wants to interact with anyone.

The events will take place after Sam Bridges reconnected North America via the Chiral Network. However, the story won’t follow the game’s protagonist directly, but other survivors who have chosen different paths. Among them are an elderly man trying to connect people through unconventional methods, a soldier trapped in a cycle of violence, and a young man full of resentment toward his own existence.

Of course, the young protagonist can’t stay isolated forever. A series of unexpected encounters will pull her out of isolation, forcing her to face a reality she had long preferred to ignore. The production will tell a story independent of the games, though it will retain the same universe and its unique rules.

Veterans from Attack on Titan and Psycho-Pass to work on the anime

For the creative team, Takayuki Sano will direct at E&H production, known for works like Ninja Kamui and Bullet/Bullet. Sano also served as episode animation director for Attack on Titan: The Final Season, while Hideo Kojima will serve as executive producer.

Tow Ubukata will write the scripts and handle series composition. The writer is known for his Mardock Scramble novels, as well as working on productions like Ghost in the Shell: Arise, Fafner, and Psycho-Pass 2. Original character designs will be by Ilya Kuvshinov, who previously worked on Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045, with Sayaka Koiso adapting them for animation.

Sano explained that he took on the project with a strong sense of responsibility, believing Kojima’s works have a special ability to emotionally connect with audiences. The director also noted he wanted to achieve something similar with this adaptation, which will be done via hand-drawn 2D animation.

It’s worth noting this isn’t the only adaptation. Kojima Productions is also developing Death Stranding Mosquito, an animated film with an independent story, as well as a live-action feature. For now, Death Stranding Isolations has no exact release date and its voice cast hasn’t been revealed.

Do you think Sam Bridges will appear in this new story, or would you prefer the poor delivery man finally gets some rest?
