The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, the follow-up to Nintendo’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie from 2023, first hit theaters worldwide on April 1 this year. Before the Japanese debut of the film, set for April 24, game director and producer Shigeru Miyamoto took part in a joint media session to mark the occasion. During an interview with Nintendo Dream Web, Miyamoto discussed the reasons behind Nintendo’s delayed entry into producing feature films based on their intellectual properties.

“Because we never know what kind of game we’ll be developing next, giving our characters overly intricate backstories could potentially limit our creative freedom. I’m comfortable with constraints in gameplay mechanics, but the main reason we avoided making movies for so long is that we didn’t want to be restricted by a fixed narrative,” Miyamoto clarified.

This aligns with Nintendo’s emphasis on prioritizing gameplay over narrative and ensuring accessibility in their titles. Given the vast ensemble of characters, maintaining diverse gameplay experiences while adhering to a consistent canon across decades of releases would pose a significant challenge.

As a result, characters like Princess Peach, a central figure in the Mario franchise for decades, lacked a detailed backstory until Nintendo ventured into film production. “Working on the movies has made it incredibly enjoyable to flesh out the characters in numerous ways,” Miyamoto noted. “That’s why, moving forward, we plan to align future games with the character histories established in the films whenever possible.”

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie delves into Princess Peach’s character, revealing a significant secret about her origins (which we’ll omit to avoid spoilers). Miyamoto confirmed, however, that while her backstory was crafted specifically for the film, the plot twist is considered canonical and will likely appear or be referenced in upcoming Nintendo games.

Separately, the live-action Legend of Zelda film is scheduled to debut in theaters in 2027, prompting anticipation about how Nintendo will adapt the source material and whether any new cinematic twists will influence the video game series’ lore.
