“Shut up, this is Japan!”: Minister defends manga and anime amid foreign criticism

Minister Kimi Onoda made it clear that the State will act as a shield against international pressures.

Shut up, this is Japan!

How many times have we seen series being shut down in the West for not fitting their standards? Too many. But it seems Japan’s leaders are tired of bending over. At the Nico Nico Super Conference 2026, Minister Kimi Onoda, in charge of the Cool Japan strategy, took the mic and made things crystal clear. Her message to those criticizing the anime industry, manga, and video games was deadly.

“Shut up, this is Japan”

That was the exact phrase that echoed at the event and is now going viral. Yakamashii, kore ga Nihon ja! The official held nothing back, explaining that the huge success of otaku culture isn’t thanks to laws or bureaucrats. All the credit goes to the sweat of content creators and the endless passion of fans. So what’s the government’s role? Silent support. Onoda insisted the State shouldn’t interfere or dictate what can be drawn, ensuring creative freedom stays intact.

The most intense part of her speech came when she addressed the delicate topic of foreign censorship. If a work faces irrational pressure or criticism from abroad, the minister promised the government will act as an unbreakable shield to protect Japanese content. No public apologies to appease the international market. She also proposed a single window to manage all international paperwork, so artists don’t waste time fighting bureaucracy and can focus on what they do best.

The true soft power of a nation

Seeing such a high-ranking official defend Japan’s main tool of soft power fiercely is something you don’t see every day. This stance marks a huge difference from past political initiatives that ended up hindering the industry with absurd regulations. Today, Japan’s message to its artists is simple: draw, animate, and create without fearβ€”we’ll handle those who take offense abroad.

With Japan no longer giving in to Western moral pressure, do you think animation studios will dare to release even riskier stories, or will the online controversy remain an unavoidable headache?
