The popularity of Square Enix’s 2023 visual novel Paranormasight: The Seven Mysteries of Honjo led to the creation of the 2025 spin-off manga Paranormasight File 25: Encounter with the Psychic Girl Kurozuru Miwo and a standalone follow-up, this year’s Paranormasight: The Mermaid’s Curse. All three installments are set during the Showa era (December 25, 1926 – January 7, 1989), but a Famitsu interview with series director Takanari Ishiyama hints that upcoming entries might adopt a more “modern twist”.

When questioned about the future direction of Paranormasight, Ishiyama expressed a desire to keep the series’ path flexible. As long as a project incorporates supernatural elements and features the Storyteller, he believes it can rightfully carry the Paranormasight title.

Although the existing works are rooted in the 1980s, Ishiyama suggested that an installment set in the Heisei (January 8, 1989 – April 30, 2019) or Reiwa (May 1, 2019 – present day) periods would be acceptable. Producer Kazuma Oushu added that the series could even explore distant historical or futuristic settings, drawing a parallel to Osamu Tezuka’s multi-era manga series, Phoenix.

Neither developer has confirmed any upcoming projects, but they appreciate the franchise’s episodic structure. Ishiyama designed the Paranormasight games to be accessible to newcomers, though most players engage with them in release order. He is particularly curious about the reception of The Mermaid’s Curse among those who began their experience with it.

Paranormasight: The Mermaid’s Curse is available on Windows (Steam), Nintendo Switch 2, iOS, and Android.
