Sad news: Seiyuu Yukie Maeda retires after 30 years of career due to cancer
Voice actress Yukie Maeda announced her retirement after 30 years of career due to aggressive cancer.
26 February 2026
The Japanese dubbing industry bids farewell to a veteran who dedicated her life to the microphones. This Wednesday, voice actress (seiyuu) Yukie Maeda took to her social media to announce news that broke the hearts of her followers: at the end of this February 2026, she will permanently retire from voice acting after 30 years of career. The reason is the rapid deterioration of her health, which prevents her from continuing to attend recording studios.

A painful battle against cancer
Maeda’s medical situation is extremely delicate. Last October, the actress made public that she suffered from a malignant sarcoma, a rare and extremely aggressive type of cancer that attacks connective tissues (muscles, fat, nerves, or blood vessels). Despite undergoing surgery in spring 2025, the disease returned for the umpteenth time, forcing her to receive treatments to prolong her life.
The physical toll of the operations has been severe. Maeda explained that her last intervention affected the nerves in her left leg, making everyday tasks like walking long distances or transferring on Japanese trains a true hell. Initially, she had moved to the Kansai region to try to continue working in a fixed studio in Kyoto, but facing the constant threat of sudden health deterioration, she made the difficult decision to end her career and thank everyone who supported her for three decades.

The legacy of a versatile voice
During her 30-year career, Maeda demonstrated incredible versatility. Anime fans will remember her for bringing Sōsō (Cao Cao) to life in the popular franchise Shin Koihime Musō, Carlos in Transformers: Armada, and Ino in Kamichu!. In the video game field, she left her mark by voicing Ferri in the classic puzzle series Puyo Puyo and lending her voice to several titles of Ratchet & Clank in Japan.
Additionally, as is common for many industry professionals seeking to expand their work horizons, Maeda had a prolific career in the OVA and adult visual novel market (eroge) under the alias Kana Nojima. Under this alias, she voiced iconic characters in productions like Kanojo x Kanojo x Kanojo, Angelium, and Mahō Shōjo Sae, demonstrating impeccable professionalism regardless of the type of work she was involved in.
The departure of Yukie Maeda from recording booths leaves a void in the industry, but her voice will be immortalized in all the projects she brought to life. Which of all her characters do you remember with the most fondness to honor her legacy?
