Japanese developer LEMORION revealed on June 15 that their trending hide-and-seek party game Meccha Chameleon has surpassed 2 million units sold. This update came just a day after the game reached the 1 million threshold, and only five days after its debut Steam release. As an independently published indie title, the game’s swift rise to success has garnered widespread admiration from fellow developers across Japan.

Mecha Chameleon is a multiplayer hide-and-seek experience centered around drawing and disguise. Players control a plain white avatar and compete in hide-and-seek matches across 3D environments filled with objects. The seeker must track down the hidden players, who are eliminated if spotted.

The unique feature is that players can freely customize their avatars with colors and patterns of their choice. You can also pick up colors from points scattered throughout the level, allowing you to match the surroundings. While you can also simply hide behind objects or on elevated terrain, the main strategy is to utilize the game’s drawing mechanics to blend yourself into the background. The outcome is, as you’d expect, a wonderfully chaotic hide-and-seek encounter.

The title supports online multiplayer and offers several modes, including a classic format where one seeker must find everyone before a timer expires, a mode where found players become seekers themselves, and another where everyone hides first before racing to find all others the fastest.

Currently holding a “Very Positive” rating on Steam, Mecha Chameleon was crafted by game developer LEMORION. On their X profile, they credit HAGANEIRO as a co-creator, indicating that the game was developed by at least a two-person team. Additionally, the Steam store page confirms the title is self-published.

Mecha Chameleon had already gained significant buzz before launch due to its innovative concept, with Steam Wishlists exceeding 500,000 on the eve of release. The momentum appears to have not only continued but intensified following launch, as the game rapidly sold over 5 million units and peaked at over 130 thousand concurrent players (SteamDB). At the time of writing, Meccha Chameleon’s popularity seems to stem mainly from English-speaking users, as over half of the game’s Steam reviews are in English.

Following LEMORION’s announcement of the game passing the 2-million milestone yesterday, industry professionals in Japan couldn’t help but remark on how remarkable Meccha Chameleon’s success is when compared to the market’s current landscape. Mixi and Sega game producer Taira Nakamura stated, “Even without spending money on promotion, they’ve sold 2 million copies in 5 days, despite the low price point. This is an unbelievable achievement for the game industry and game companies.”

He suggests that Meccha Chameleon’s commercial triumph comes from its high popularity among streamers, and that the game itself was likely designed (consciously or unconsciously) with the concept of “being fun to stream” as its foundation. “For those of us who became passionate about games during an era when streaming didn’t exist, this is a perspective we don’t consciously consider. I don’t think there will be any commercial games coming out in the future that don’t factor streaming into their design, so perhaps an even greater mindset shift is necessary,” he added.

Meccha Chameleon is available for PC (Steam).
