Two months ago, Japanese space development firm Space Entry initiated a CAMPFIRE crowdfunding drive to secure funding for their upcoming Minna no Haro initiative, backed by Bandai Namco Filmworks. This venture, part of the “HELLO HARO” mission, aims to deploy an autonomous space robot into orbit to assist Japanese astronauts aboard the International Space Station. What sets this endeavor apart is that the robot is modeled after Haro, the lovable mascot from the Mobile Suit Gundam series, and was personally designed by renowned mech artist Kunio Okawara.

Since its launch on April 17, the crowdfunding effort hit its 3 million yen (approximately $18.5k USD) target in just two days. By June 16, roughly two months later, Space Entry revealed that the campaign had exceeded expectations, raising over 12 million yen—400% of its initial goal. Currently, the total stands at around 12.75 million yen ($78.8k USD). With eight days remaining, the company is striving to achieve the stretch goal of 13 million yen. The project’s immense popularity may stem from its ability to fulfill the dreams of Gundam enthusiasts, as well as its special rewards that allow backers to actively participate in the HELLO HARO mission.

The robot faithfully mirrors the fictional Gundam character, complete with distinctive features. It boasts 360-degree propulsion using propellers and AI-powered conversational abilities, enabling direct communication with Japanese astronauts. If all goes according to plan, Minna no Haro is slated for launch in Winter 2026, followed by orbital experiments in 2027. Space Entry intends for the findings to inform the development of next-generation space robots.
