In a recent announcement, TOHO disclosed that Nobuyuki Fukumoto’s renowned gambling manga Kaiji is set to receive a fresh live-action film adaptation, titled Kaiji: Life Revenge Game. Slated for a January 2027 debut in Japan, the movie will serve as the fourth entry in the live-action Kaiji franchise, marking a return after a seven-year hiatus. The news has sparked considerable enthusiasm among enthusiasts, though Tokyo Sports reports that the project initially encountered obstacles due to a series of local “online casino scandals.”
Most gambling activities (excluding horse race betting and pachinko) are prohibited in Japan, with online gambling also facing a ban. Engaging with offshore online casinos is similarly unlawful, yet last year witnessed several instances of idols and celebrities being apprehended for such actions. Each scandal triggered widespread public backlash, led to “cancellations,” and tarnished the reputations of those involved and their associated brands, making the issue particularly contentious between February and June.
Interestingly, Kaiji: Life Revenge Game commenced production shortly after this wave of gambling-related controversies, in the summer of 2025. According to a crew member cited by Tokyo Sports, these conditions prompted the decision to withhold any announcement or promotion of the film’s production. Given Kaiji’s thematic focus on gambling, the prevailing climate on social media—where sensitivity toward gambling addiction had heightened—made it challenging to unveil the project. “There was even uncertainty among the production team regarding the film’s eventual release,” the source noted.
In the end, the film’s reveal came a year later, on June 10, without facing any major opposition, suggesting that the delay may have been beneficial (especially since Kaiji’s narrative does not endorse gambling in any way).
Enthusiasts of the original live-action Kaiji films will be pleased to learn that Tatsuya Fujiwara is set to reprise his role as the protagonist Kaiji, while Toya Sato is returning as the director. The screenplay was crafted by series producer Masatoshi Yamaguchi, with input from the manga’s original creator Fukumoto.
Kaiji: Life Revenge Game is scheduled to debut in Japan on January 29, 2027.
