The panel of the CloverWorks studio at Anime Expo finally cleared up doubts about one of its most enigmatic original projects. After a preliminary announcement in 2024 that suffered multiple delays, the production committee confirmed via a spectacular trailer that Grotesqqque will officially hit theaters on November 6. This original feature film will not follow a conventional narrative structure but will be presented as an anthology divided into three completely independent stories that clash in tone and style.

To unify this peculiar visual mosaic, the director and head screenwriter chair is occupied by veteran Atsushi Nishigori, whose massive creative stamp we already know from his work on titles like Darling in the Franxx. The three stories that make up the film are titled “ÆLIENS”, “4649GIRL”, and “NOCTURN: EN CETTE NUIT GROTESQUE”. This technical showcase doesn’t rest solely on CloverWorks but counts on the monstrous financial muscle of JOEN, a production company established jointly with Aniplex, Wit Studio, and Shueisha, guaranteeing top-tier animation quality for the big screen.

Unprecedented narrative and musical chaos

Although the promotional video gave us a first taste of the frenetic opening theme and the color palette of each segment, the staff still holds several heavy cards up their sleeve. During its early production phases, the creative team revealed that this anthology will feature fourteen main voice actors and an absurd catalog of thirty-five different musical acts to set the tone for the three universes. This aggressive combination of talents aims to give each short film an audiovisual identity that contrasts violently with the rest of the footage.
