The indie game The Dream of a Cockspur is set to launch on PC via Steam on July 22. Developed by solo-creator roccay, this title is a surreal point-and-click adventure where players must solve puzzles and uncover secrets on a desolate island following the crash-landing of a mysterious celestial object.

Disclosure: The publisher of this game, PLAYISM, is part of Active Gaming Media, the owner of this website.

In The Dream of a Cockspur, players take on the role of a researcher whose team has spent two weeks examining the enigmatic fallen object on the island without incident. However, their mission is derailed when their ship, the sole means of escape, malfunctions. Stranded on the island, strange occurrences begin to unfold, prompting players to determine whether someone is deliberately sabotaging the mission, or if, perhaps, a concealed horror lies within the island.

Players will gradually piece together their situation as they engage with their environment. Finding new objects unlocks fresh character options and viewpoints, as the player’s identity and their connection to the world remain shrouded in mystery. Amidst the uncertainty, a therapy dog named Numnum provides solace to the beleaguered protagonist.

The developer, roccay, previously studied molecular cell systems and pathology, and has previously released several minigames on itch.io. The Dream of Cockspur represents their first full-length release. The distinctive visuals showcased in the trailer draw inspiration from surrealist works, stop-motion animation using clay, and plaster objects. According to roccay, the trailer’s depiction of the ship splitting open was initially created in 3D, but was later replaced with clay after they deemed the original attempt insufficient. They also noted that the 40-color clay set purchased for the stop-motion animations was the most costly aspect of development.

The Dream of Cockspur is scheduled to release for PC via Steam on July 22.
