According to GameWatch, Konami recently hosted a seminar titled “The Art of Producing Silent Hill” at Japan’s CEDEC 2026. During the event, series producer Motoi Okamoto and other key development staff shared their perspectives on the creation of the Silent Hill 2 remake and the upcoming Silent Hill f.
Notably, Okamoto emphasized that for games where storytelling is paramount, producers should make a habit of reading books. He even went so far as to say that it’s crucial for a producer to familiarize themselves with the bulk of a writer’s work before assigning them to a game’s narrative. In Okamoto’s view, this isn’t just about showing “basic respect,” but also about grasping the writer’s unique style, quirks, strengths, and weaknesses. Given that every writer can produce both masterpieces and flops, he believes it’s the producer’s duty to fully understand their creative tendencies and collaborate closely with them.

For Silent Hill f, Konami enlisted Ryukishi07, renowned for his work on the When They Cry visual novel franchise, to craft the game’s narrative. Okamoto explained that this choice was driven by several factors: Ryukishi07’s deep experience in horror writing; his previous works resonated strongly with the Silent Hill universe; and, personally, Okamoto is a fan of his creations.
Highlighting the significance of “input” in game development, Okamoto revealed that, “within our team, we push each other, particularly the scenario writers, to read at least 100 to 200 books annually.”
With such a commitment to storytelling, anticipation is high for which writers Konami will approach for future Silent Hill titles, especially considering Okamoto’s pledge to continue experimenting with both narrative and gameplay in each new installment of the series.
