Traveling across the world to try local cuisine and then spitting in the face of its culture seems to be the new (and regrettable) favorite pastime of some content creators. A foreign woman has just earned massive public scorn from the Japanese and international community after a video spread showing her throwing away a half-eaten portion of takoyaki in a crowded street in Osaka, all while an accomplice shamelessly recorded the scene.

The short eight-second clip, now viral on social media, shows the woman calmly approaching a yellow public bin to discard the container with traditional octopus balls and their wooden sticks. After closing the trash lid, the tourist turns to the camera in the busy pedestrian crossing and makes a derogatory comment. According to video transcripts, the woman claims that food in Japan is bad and justifies her action by implying that, at least, throwing it away gives her a break from having to eat it.

The record of problematic tourists keeps growing

While complaining about restaurant food or leaving plates untouched is not new among rude visitors, this case raised alarms precisely because of the deliberate intention to record the act of throwing food on the street in one of the country’s most important tourist and culinary areas. So far, the woman’s identity remains anonymous, and she has not issued any public apology, but her arrogant attitude has once again brought to light the frustration of locals toward foreigners who seek only to generate cheap controversy.
