Square Enix’s Octopath Traveler franchise marked its 8-year anniversary in July. In a special interview with Dengeki Online, key members of the series’ development team, including producer Tomoya Asano, recently discussed the future of Octopath Traveler.
With the 8-year mark behind them and the 10-year milestone approaching, Asano acknowledges that excitement for an “Octopath Traveler III” is at an all-time high. However, he expresses regret that no details can be shared at this time. “We truly understand your expectations, and I just wanted to let you know that,” he stated.
Asano further notes that given the significant growth of the HD-2D art style and the impressive sales of Octopath Traveler – which has surpassed 7 million copies – his team feels strongly that they “cannot deliver something incomplete.” Both he and the other developers agree that “if we’re going to proceed, we’ll aim for the stars,” hinting that any potential sequel will be even more expansive in scope or concept. They urge fans to “stay tuned for what’s coming next.”
Additionally, when discussing other media expansions for the Octopath Traveler universe – such as novels and the TRPG adaptation – the developers mention they’re open to hearing what fans would like to see, inviting suggestions.
