The fanaticism of some fans is reaching government records. What once seemed like an internet joke is now canon on the identity documents of hundreds of people. The Directorate General of Population and Civil Registration of Indonesia has just revealed its demographic data for the first half of 2026, confirming that a huge number of citizens carry names inspired directly by iconic characters from the anime industry.

Looking closely at the amazing statistics, Masashi Kishimoto’s ninja franchise completely dominates birth certificates. Currently, there are 190 people registered with the name Uzumaki and 157 literally named Naruto. The fandom for this universe doesn’t stop there, as they also counted 158 people under the name Sasuke and 152 as Uchiha. And yes, to many’s surprise, the new generations are already carrying the modern legacy: 60 children were legally registered as Boruto.

Beyond the ninja fever, other Japanese TV classics also have a strong presence in the Asian country. The evergreen work of Doraemon contributed 181 people named Nobita, 16 baptized as Doraemon, and 8 as Suneo. The future pirate kings were also present, with 79 individuals registered as D. Luffy and 37 as Usopp from the legendary One Piece. According to Director General Teguh Setyabudi, this peculiar trend demonstrates a clear generational shift where otaku parents prefer to immortalize the nostalgia of their childhood heroes instead of resorting to traditional cultural names.

As this demographic trend is increasing in various corners of the world, would you dare to register your child with your favorite anime character’s name, or do you think it’s a surefire way for them to face mockery during their school years?
