Touhou Project series creator ZUN revealed an update to the pricing structure for mainline games and music CDs on August 13, through Touhou Yomoyama News.
With this marginal price adjustment of under three dollars, all Touhou games distributed officially at conventions will cost 1500 yen (approximately $9.5), while the retail price will rise to 1600 yen beginning September 1, 2026. These changes seem to apply exclusively to physical editions, leaving the impact on Steam pricing uncertain at this time.
On X, ZUN addressed fans, stating, βIβve kept prices consistent for years, but Iβve been informed that production costs have reached their limit,β implying that the previous pricing may no longer cover development expenses.
In reaction, Japanese Touhou enthusiasts largely concur that the games were originally priced too low, and the new cost remains remarkably affordable. Instead of scrambling to purchase unowned titles before the price change, many fans are eager to repurchase their favorites at the updated rate to demonstrate support for the series.
Meanwhile, the seriesβ inaugural Windows title, Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, is slated for an official remake, arriving on Steam, Nintendo Switch, and PS5 on September 10.
