Via a recent announcement on their official X account, the creators of the Japanese indie animation project lain: Protocol 7 have revealed the release of a playable demo for the upcoming visual novel adaptation. This demo offers approximately 20 to 40 minutes of gameplay and is compatible with both PC and Mac systems, available for download through itch.io.

lain: Protocol 7 is an independent fan project inspired by the anime and PS1 game, Serial Experiments Lain. The crowdfunding initiative for an OVA adaptation was launched on Campfire on July 7, and it quickly achieved its initial 2 million yen target within 24 hours. The official project page describes the OVA as a bridge between the 1998 original and the realities of the 2020s, exploring the question: βWhat remains human in an age where records and AI can speak for us?β The team has embraced AI-assisted tools in production to authentically capture the modern essence of the setting. This indie endeavor is produced under the TTL 2019-2028 fan creation guidelines for Serial Experiments Lain.
The visual novel adaptation of lain: Protocol 7 was initially planned as a reward for hitting the 5 million yen stretch goal, which was reached just two days after the campaign began. Additional stretch goals, all now achieved, include full voice acting and an animated opening sequence. The crowdfunding drive remains active, with the project having surpassed 600% of its original goal, currently standing at an impressive 12 million yen.
According to the itch.io page, the playable demo presents an alternate perspective on events that will unfold in the full-length OVA. The complete visual novel is expected to include scenes omitted from the animation and offer alternative story conclusions for lain: Protocol 7.
The demo for lain: Protocol 7 is available now for free on PC and macOS via itch.io. It offers 20 to 40 minutes of gameplay and is exclusively in Japanese at this time. The full versionβs release date has not yet been announced.
