The new AI game of Atelier Ryza sparks fury over its charges
The RyzaChat AI app debuts in Japan amid heavy criticism for limiting chats without payment.
25 August 2026
If you ever thought interactions with anime characters would be limited to game screens, reality has just shifted to real-time chat with an alchemist from Kurken Island. On August 25, 2026, SpiralAI launched in Japan the RyzaChat:AI app (RyzaChat:AI, Creating Your Own Midsummer Dream Story with Ryza), an official project licensed by Koei Tecmo Games and Gust that allows direct conversation with Reisalin Stout. The tool arrived delayed due to high pre-registration demand and is already facing criticism over a paywall that limits free conversations after a few exchanges.

The app places the player on Kurken Island alongside Ryza without a fixed script. RPG-style conversations drive exploration, material gathering, alchemical synthesis, missions, and combat, while the Chat mode allows casual interactions without advancing the main story. Ryza changes expressions and gestures based on dialogue, and her synthesized voice comes from new recordings by the original voice actress. The world map unlocks progressively to visit villages, forests, and rivers where familiar or new figures appear, all with the light and summer tone of the Secret trilogy.
The Atelier franchise has for decades focused on alchemy RPGs under the Gust and Koei Tecmo label. The Ryza line includes Atelier Ryza: Ever Darkness & the Secret Hideout (2019), Atelier Ryza 2: Lost Legends & the Secret Fairy (2021), and Atelier Ryza 3: Alchemist of the End & the Secret Key (2023), emphasizing character-driven stories, detailed world-building, and turn-based combat tied to crafted equipment. In Latin America, it’s known mainly for Switch, PlayStation, and PC games, plus the 2023 anime adaptation.
SpiralAI developed and published the app under official license. The SpiralLLM model was trained only with authorized scenarios and materials from Atelier Ryza, and illustrations received human supervision from the original team without generative AI for art. The project promises royalty revenue sharing with voice actors, illustrators, and rights holders.

After the tutorial, free users reported that conversations cut off quickly, and only the “RyzaChat PRO” subscription (980 yen monthly or 6,000 annually, with about 15 turns every ten days) allows continuation. Paid token packs offer extra messages, and the three-day trial renews automatically to the annual plan. Complaints highlight the high cost versus the limited free messages and the immediate pressure to pay.
The developers explained on August 25 that real-time AI processing and voice synthesis require significant GPU resources, difficult to secure due to global generative hardware demand. Pre-registration peaks exceeded expectations, and the team is working to expand infrastructure to stabilize the service. Player conversations won’t be used for model training, and the system respects the original world under Gust supervision.

The app already supports Japanese, English, and Brazilian Portuguese, though the global version is still in preparation. The youthful tone and freedom to create personalized stories aim to capture the spirit of a summer on the island, but restricted access marks the current debate.

Given that the project promises to share revenue with rights holders and that conversations shape the narrative without a pre-set script, do you think this AI chat app will become a viable model for other RPG franchises or remain an expensive experiment for the most loyal fans?
