Maria Holic returns 12 years later with a new manga sequel

The story will continue a year after the original ending in Comic Alive.

Twelve years after its main story ended, one of the community’s most chaotic and beloved parodic comedies is back. Author Minari Endo confirmed on August 25, 2026, that her acclaimed work Maria Holic will have a new manga sequel titled Maria Holic: Sono Ato no 12-kagetsu no Ohanashi, which will officially begin publication on August 27 in the October issue of Kadokawa’s Monthly Comic Alive magazine.

This new installment will continue the wild adventures of the protagonists exactly one year after the original’s final events, which were published between 2006 and 2014 in fourteen volumes. To accompany the announcement, the creator shared a new illustration featuring Mariya Shido and her sarcastic maid Matsurika Shinoji with a refreshed design, alongside a miniature version of Kanako Miyamae suffering her classic emotional breakdowns.

The story follows Kanako, a high school student with androphobia who breaks out in severe hives at the thought of physical contact with men. In her search for the perfect lesbian romance, she transfers to the exclusive Ame no Kisaki Catholic girls’ boarding school, where she meets the beautiful Mariya Shido. To her misfortune, the supposed ideal girl turns out to be a sadistic boy in disguise who blackmails her to keep his secret while becoming her roommate, unleashing a parody of the yuri genre and exaggerated nosebleeds.

This formula became a true cult gem in the anime industry thanks to the adaptation produced by the renowned studio Shaft. Under the masterful direction of Akiyuki Shinbo and Yukihiro Miyamoto, the first season premiered in 2009, followed by a second season in 2011 under the title Maria†Holic: Alive, becoming an absolute reference for absurd humor of its time.

Created by Minari Endo (who also concluded her extensive work Hatenko Yugi in 2022), Maria Holic stood out for breaking school romance clichés with a satire loaded with physical comedy, eccentric characters, and psychological dynamics among its protagonists. Its return after over a decade marks a milestone for fans awaiting to see the chaotic Ame no Kisaki boarding school again.

With the original story returning with a one-year time jump in the manga, do you think this surprising comeback could be the perfect trigger for Shaft to produce a third TV season?
