The mind behind the beloved Disgaea series, Sohei Niikawa, formerly of Nippon Ichi Software, recently chatted with Dengeki Online about the birth of the company’s flagship franchise and the unique 2D art style that defined its early games.
Reflecting on the past, Niikawa admitted feeling puzzled after the sales figures for La Pucelle: Tactics, the precursor to Disgaea. “It was a game I really enjoyed, and I honestly thought it would be a big hit. But it didn’t sell well, and I was clueless about how to make it successful,” he recalled. For his next project, he embraced a philosophy of “since this company might not even be around next year, let’s just pack the game with everything fun, without any reservations,” which led to the creation of Disgaea: Hour of Darkness. He likened the development process to “making a mishmash of great ideas.”

Disgaea: Hour of Darkness debuted on the PlayStation 2 during a period when the gaming world was shifting toward 3D visuals. Yet, the game deliberately stuck with a pixelated 2D art style. When questioned about this choice, Niikawa explained it as a “survival tactic for the underdog.”
While he hinted that a 3D Disgaea was considered early on, he ultimately dismissed the idea after seeing Final Fantasy VII, Square’s first 3D entry in their flagship series.
“When I played Final Fantasy VII on the PlayStation, I thought, ‘There’s no way our company should follow this path.’ I realized that if we, with our limited resources, had tried to copy it, we’d have been in serious trouble,” Niikawa elaborated.
It wasn’t until after a Disgaea event in the United States that Niikawa gained clarity on the series’ direction. “Seeing the [US] fans laughing at our Japanese parody jokes made me believe that all otaku around the world are kindred spirits, and that we should trust what we find entertaining and just create it,” he said.
As for Niikawa’s current endeavors, he’s working on a new SRPG in collaboration with Arc System Works. Entitled Demons’ Night Fever, the game involves raising the baby demon Giga Super Death, committing evil acts, and sacrificing allies in tactical battles. It’s scheduled for release in 2026 on PC (Steam), PS5, and Nintendo Switch.
