In anticipation of its January 2027 debut, RGG Studio’s upcoming action-adventure game Stranger Than Heaven has showcased a Gamescom demo and fresh gameplay footage. The demo primarily highlights the game’s combat mechanics, but the creators assure players that exploration of the city is another significant aspect to look forward to.

Stranger Than Heaven unfolds as a human drama across five Japanese cities set in five distinct eras, following protagonist Makoto Daito’s life. The narrative begins in Kokura during 1915, then progresses to Kure in 1929, Minami in 1943, Atami in 1951, and concludes in Kamurocho by 1965.

While covering five cities may seem extensive, Stranger Than Heaven producer Hiroyuki Sakamoto shared with Inven Global that he remains confident “the level design density for each individual location is the most detailed we’ve ever created.” This is especially true regarding enterable buildings and various shops players can visit during their exploration.

On a related note, RGG Studio lead Masayoshi Yokoyama previously shared with us that in terms of map size, Stranger Than Heaven’s locations will be roughly comparable to that of mainline Like a Dragon games, so the increase in density shouldn’t get too overwhelming. Likewise, the number of minigames will be brought down a notch given the game’s historical setting.

Still, Stranger Than Heaven appears to be shaping up into a substantial game, especially considering it was originally conceived as a trilogy and has already been in development for 6-7 years.

STRANGER THAN HEAVEN is scheduled to launch on January 15, 2027 for PC (Steam), Xbox Series X❘S and PlayStation 5. The title will also be available on Xbox Game Pass.
