With the launch of Dragon’s Dogma 2’s Dark Arisen expansion bringing a brand-new region alongside numerous gameplay enhancements, it’s clear that the development team placed significant emphasis on gathering player feedback from the base game. In a conversation with Famitsu, director Kento Kinoshita and producers Naoto Oyama and Yoshiaki Hirabayashi discussed how fan suggestions from Japan and international markets diverged considerably.

Hirabayashi noted that when analyzing player data, the feedback from Japan and Western regions proved to be “completely opposite.” This revelation provided valuable insights into how cultural distinctions influence gameplay preferences among different player bases.

The most pronounced differences emerged regarding certain gameplay mechanics in Dragon’s Dogma 2. Oyama explained that players in Japan and Asia frequently highlighted what they considered “inconveniences,” whereas their counterparts in Europe and North America often embraced these same elements as “friction” that added to the experience. Although no specific examples were named, the developers earlier mentioned aspects like traveling on foot and Dragonsplague as such gameplay elements.

Acknowledging these varying expectations, the development team stated they are cautious not to cater exclusively to one group, as doing so could alienate players from the other side. Striking a balance is essential to satisfy a global audience.

Kinoshita pointed to the new equipment transmog feature in Dark Arisen as a case in point. When introduced in Dragon’s Dogma Online, the feature sparked significant debate among players. Consequently, Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen allows players to alter their outfit appearances, while also giving those who prefer not to use cosmetic outfits the option to disable them. The upcoming Hard Mode, available at launch, was another feature strongly requested by the player community.

Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen is set to launch on October 9 for Windows (Steam), Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X❘S.
