Renowned anime director Yuji Yanase passes away at 59
The veteran director of Isekai wa Smartphone died at 59 from a heart attack.
Japanese animation lost one of its most dedicated and passionate behind-the-scenes workers. The official website of the anime The Insipid Prince’s Furtive Grab for The Throne confirmed the passing of director and animator Yuji Yanase at 59 years old, a news that shocked the community as he was directing two simultaneous ongoing projects.
According to the official statement, his death occurred on August 22 due to a myocardial infarction, with a private funeral attended only by his closest family members. The most striking aspect of his departure is that it happened while Yuji Yanase was leading two productions during the 2026 summer season, overseeing The Insipid Prince’s Furtive Grab for The Throne and The World’s Strongest Rearguard – Labyrinth Country’s Novice Seeker.

Yanase’s career spanned nearly four decades of uninterrupted work. He began his career in the late 1980s as a key and in-between animator, participating in legendary productions like the film Akira, the feature Doraemon the Movie: Nobita’s Dorabian Nights, and the series Kaze o Nuke!. Over the years, his talent led him to take on supervisory roles in high-profile projects such as Macross 7, The Legend of Zorro, Tenchi Universe, and Tetsujin 28-go FX.
During the 1990s and 2000s, Yanase solidified his reputation as an animation director and key collaborator in cult works. His history includes episodes of memorable comedies like Saber Marionette J and Fancy Lala, the satire Excel Saga, the dark action Hellsing, the sci-fi romance Chobits, the thriller Mezzo, the peaceful Aria the Animation, and the musical combat series Symphogear.

After decades of experience at the drawing board, Yuji Yanase made his definitive leap to general direction in 2014 with the short comedy Himegoto, followed by Onsen Yosei Hakone-chan in 2015. His recognition in the TV format came in 2017 when he took charge of the anime In Another World With My Smartphone (Isekai wa Smartphone to Tomo ni), becoming an expert in fantasy and isekai adaptations.
He later helmed popular titles among genre fans such as If It’s for My Daughter, I’d Even Defeat a Demon Lord (2019), By the Grace of the Gods (2020) and its second season, as well as In the Land of Leadale, My Unique Skill Makes Me OP even at Level 1, I’ll Become a Villainess Who Goes Down in History, and Apocalypse Bringer Mynoghra. His work style was characterized by total dedication, actively participating as a key animator and episode director even in the series he fully directed.
With an immense legacy spanning from 1980s classics to today’s most popular isekai, which of Yuji Yanase’s works do you remember with the most affection?
