Dismissively labeling online fantasy stories as repetitive garbage is the easiest stance to take. However, writer Kaiyan has passionately defended web isekai novels, asking for just five minutes of attention before judging them. For the author, the chaotic or unpolished nature of these works isn’t a flaw, but the main reason they captivate millions.

Kaiyan draws a clear line between traditional high fantasy and the works dominating digital platforms. Measuring modern isekai by the same standards as The Lord of the Rings or A Wizard of Earthsea is pointless. These stories truly stem from video game formats, drawing inspiration from titles like Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy, as well as tabletop RPG classics like Record of Lodoss War. This mix creates a universe of shared tropes that constantly reinvents itself.

The strength of these novels lies in the direct connection between writer and reader. Unlike traditional literature, which tends to be more technical and reserved, internet publications explicitly capture the authors’ desires without hesitation. Whether it’s reincarnation, cheat skills, a peaceful lifestyle, or villainess restarts, the narrative aims to deliver immediate entertainment. While the leap to print often softens the wildest moments, that original enthusiasm keeps the spark alive in every chapter.

Two recommendations beyond typical giants

Rather than citing usual blockbusters, Kaiyan recommended two unique works showcasing Kakuyomu’s variety. The first is Isekai Shachuhaku Monogatari: Outrunner PHEV by Gaimu Haga, where an ordinary office worker crosses to another world with only their plug-in hybrid vehicle. Unlike the usual invincible hero, the protagonist must make do with hard work and no magical powers.

The second suggestion offers a romantic perspective with Doumo, Suki na Hito ni Horegusuri wo Irai Sareta Majo desu by Eiko Mutsuhana. The plot follows a lake witch asked by her beloved knight to brew a love potion. This series has already surpassed one million copies in circulation and confirmed its anime adaptation under the direction of Keizo Kusakawa, featuring voice actors Mikako Komatsu and Yohei Azakami.

Shousetsuka ni Naro is Japan’s largest user-generated novel platform. With over two decades in operation, it hosts over 1.3 million registered titles and has launched over 200 works to animated screen adaptations, solidifying its role as a major entertainment industry driver in the country.
