Japanese multimedia creator, VTuber, author and developer Uka Todoki, in collaboration with publisher Artodria, has recently revealed the launch of an official development blog on Pixiv Fanbox aimed at gathering financial support for their forthcoming visual novel Girlfailure Art Club. Beyond sharing funding details, Todoki also disclosed that the team is preparing for a localized version of the game and is in the process of recruiting voice actors.

Girlfailure Art Club is a visual novel that presents an experience centered around a teenage boy who accidentally joins his high school’s art club. Players will navigate through days spent in the company of four eccentric otaku girls vying for the protagonist’s attention. Todoki initiated this project with the goal of creating a game that caters to the dorky girl niche, drawing inspiration from their own extensive experience as an art club member. The game introduces four heroinesβ€”Rinne, Shoko, Kana, and Yurieβ€”each representing a distinct otaku archetype. The announcement of this title generated significant excitement on X, capturing the interest of both Japanese and global audiences.

Reacting to this overwhelming enthusiasm, the development team chose to establish the fundraising blog to broaden the project’s horizons, which had initially been financed solely by Todoki.

“Given the tremendous support we’ve received, rather than making strange cost-cutting measures, we’re committed to going all out and creating something spectacular and impressive,” Todoki expressed. To satisfy the expectations of both local and international fans while enhancing the game’s content, the team has engaged in discussions with translators, localization firms, and voice talent agencies. Nevertheless, Todoki notes that factoring in potential localization and voice acting expenses, they require an estimated budget of several million yen to advance with development.

Initially, this title began as a self-financed passion project that Todoki pursued during spare time away from their primary occupation as a designer, with the Pixiv Fanbox serving as a space for personal journal entries and informal progress updates. However, now that Todoki has transitioned to a full-time freelance indie game developer and aims to transform their beloved project into a more substantial endeavor, the development blog has been reimagined as a fundraising platform for Girlfailure Art Club.

Currently, five distinct support tiers are available, with the most affordable option priced at 500 yen (approximately $3 USD) monthly, while the premium tier costs 10,000 yen (roughly $63 USD) per month. Supporters who choose to back the project will receive access to Girlfailure Art Club development diaries and exclusive artwork created by Todoki. The website explicitly states that all gathered funds will be exclusively allocated toward the game’s development.

Additionally, Todoki and Artodria have issued an open invitation for creators interested in contributing to Girlfailure Art Club or the developers’ upcoming projects. Artodria has already been approached by numerous professionals including illustrators, musicians, video editors, translators, Unity engineers, and voice actors, with several already joining the project team. Although there are current limitations on how many individuals can be accommodated for the Girlfailure Art Club initiative, Artodria appears to be strategizing for long-term expansion of their creative workforce.

Girlfailure Art Club is presently being developed for PC (Steam) platforms.
