Production I.G and Studio Khara have jointly unveiled Cosmoship Yamato √2199, a brand-new feature-length anime installment in the iconic Space Battleship Yamato franchise. This marks the first collaborative anime project between these two esteemed studios, with Evangelion creator Hideaki Anno taking on the roles of director, planner, and executive producer. Esteemed mecha designer Yutaka Izubuchi joins the team as co-director.

Accompanying the announcement, an official website, X account, and teaser artwork for the film have been made public. The artwork shows the Yamato’s silhouette poised for a space launch against a ravaged backdrop. Citing Oricon, development on the project commenced in 2024, following Anno’s brief mention of his involvement in a new Space Battleship Yamato entry. Though details about the anime remain scarce, it’s positioned to explore a fresh direction compared to prior remake iterations.

Reflecting on the production, Anno—who has been a lifelong admirer of the series since his youth—shared: “We’re not simply creating this to relive our childhood dreams; we aim to craft a Yamato that reflects our deepest prayers and aspirations for both the coming generation and ourselves. That’s the guiding philosophy behind this film’s creation.”

Cosmoship Yamato √2199 is currently in production. The release date is TBD.
