If the food in your palace tries to kill you three times a day, the logical solution isn’t hiring a poison taster, but escaping to the forest to hunt monsters for dinner. The popular light novel series Monster no Niku wo Kutteitara Oui ni Tsuita Ken (How I Became King by Eating Monsters) is making its big leap to television with its anime adaptation, which will be handled by the renowned studio WHITE FOX for its 2027 premiere.

The story follows Mars, the first prince of the Farune kingdom, who at twelve years old lives in constant paranoia within his castle. Almost every dish served to him contains lethal doses of poison placed by political rivals, forcing him to secretly escape to a dangerous forest inhabited by wild creatures. To avoid starving, the young prince begins hunting and devouring the flesh of these beasts, accidentally discovering that this unorthodox diet grants him a massive physical power boost with every bite.

The boy’s life takes an even more drastic turn when he encounters a mysterious red-haired woman wielding a giant sword in the dead of night. Seeing the immense potential in the boy, the warrior decides to take him as her apprentice to teach him how to master his new abilities. Thanks to this grueling training, the prince not only learns to defend himself from constant assassination attempts at court but also becomes entangled in a massive conflict threatening to destabilize the entire nation and continent.

Monster no Niku wo Kutteitara Oui ni Tsuita Ken is a fantasy and survival light novel series written by Daken and illustrated by Shiba. The story began on the web portal Shosetsuka ni Naro in early 2022 before being acquired by Micro Magazine’s GCN Bunko imprint for print publication starting in September 2023. The work also has a manga adaptation drawn by Karin Suzuragi since January 2024, with both formats exceeding 250,000 copies in circulation.
