DEMONS’ NIGHT FEVER is an upcoming tactical JRPG produced and written by Sohei Niikawa, the former Nippon Ichi Software CEO and mind behind the Disgaea series. Published by Arc System Works and developed by Niikawa’s independent studio SuperNiche, the game is set to launch on October 22 for PC (Steam), PS5, and Nintendo Switch.

In a recent interview with INVEN, Niikawa shared intriguing details about the game’s world and design. Demons’ Night Fever is a dark comedy where players become the Devil’s disciple. The twist? The Devil, named Giga Super Death, has lost all his power and reverted to a helpless infant. The narrative progresses through grid-based strategy battles, with players tasked to revive the Devil by committing heinous acts—including destroying their own allies.

Niikawa explained to INVEN that the core idea of the game is “relishing evil,” which flips the norms of traditional SRPGs like Disgaea. Instead of nurturing allies and ensuring their survival, players are encouraged to sacrifice disposable minions to gain an advantage in battles.

To keep the experience entertaining and mitigate any guilt from playing as the “bad guy,” Niikawa’s team implemented several strategies. The most amusing one involves portraying God as an unbearable character. “We made God, the antagonist, utterly despicable. In this game, God is a complete scumbag. The story is crafted so players feel, ‘I have to defeat this guy,’ he said.

Another key element is that the minions players eliminate in combat are reincarnated, only to be violently killed again. While this may not fully assuage guilt, it ensures no permanent deaths. Niikawa also noted that the characters being killed aren’t virtuous individuals, as minions are recruited from petty criminals and misfits.

To maintain a balance and keep the game within the realm of a tasteful dark comedy, Niikawa drew inspiration from Akira Toriyama’s Dr. Slump, particularly its villain designs.

DEMONS’ NIGHT FEVER is scheduled to release on October 22 for PC (Steam), PS5, and Nintendo Switch.
