The Japanese gaming studio Visual Arts, which is widely recognized for its Key visual novel label, disclosed on October 19 that Jun Maeda has been identified with pharyngeal cancer.

Jun Maeda is a co-founder of Key and has contributed to the planning, screenwriting, and music composition for numerous Key titles, such as the popular Kanon, Air, Clannad, and Little Busters. He is frequently regarded as the driving force behind the brand’s global acclaim. More recently, he authored and scored Summer Pockets, and has also been involved in the development of the free-to-play RPG Heaven Burns Red.

The announcement states that since early spring of 2026, Maeda had been experiencing throat discomfort, with symptoms intensifying over the subsequent months. He was later diagnosed with pharyngeal cancer. After evaluating his condition and treatment options, Maeda has opted for palliative care to focus on his creative endeavors rather than pursuing active treatment.

Regarding his upcoming creative projects, Maeda has finalized his contributions to the main story of Heaven Burns Red up to the first half of Chapter 6, including all key narrative points within that segment. He has also completed the musical score for the first half of Chapter 6. His continued involvement in the game will hinge on the progression of his health.

Furthermore, Maeda had intended to debut a new long-term original music venture on YouTube. However, following his diagnosis, he has decided to prioritize completing the songs currently in progress and share them with fans as soon as possible. At his specific request, all future music releases will be distributed via YouTube.

Maeda is currently receiving treatment in a hospital but remains resolute in his commitment to creative work. Fans wishing to send words of support to Jun Maeda can do so by mailing to the address listed in the official announcement.
