Kuromi takes over the big screen: She will have her first movie in 2027
Sanrio announced the first feature film starring the popular rival of My Melody, taking advantage of Halloween to celebrate her birthday in style.
After years as the self-proclaimed rival of My Melody, it seems her time to shine has finally arrived. Sanrio announced that Kuromi will have her first movie as the main character, with a release scheduled for 2027 in Japanese cinemas. The news was revealed on Halloween, coinciding with the birthday of the mischievous character who has become one of the company’s most popular figures.

The announcement came with a promotional image and a special video where Kuromi celebrates finally getting her movie. Her inseparable companion Baku appears to congratulate her, while she takes the opportunity to thank her fans, known as the KUROMIES, for all their support. For now, the movie does not have an exact release date, but it was confirmed that distributor GAGA will handle its release in Japanese cinemas.
Regarding the story, Sanrio has not yet revealed a synopsis or the production team, so we will have to wait to discover what kind of trouble Kuromi will cause in her cinematic adventure. It has also not been confirmed if My Melody will have any role, though it would be curious to see a movie about her eternal rival without them crossing paths at some point.
Kuromi has come a long way since her debut
Although she is now one of Sanrio’s most recognizable faces, Kuromi did not start her career as part of an independent product line. Her first appearance was in the anime Onegai My Melody, which premiered in April 2005, where she was introduced as the rival of the adorable bunny. Her rebellious personality, her black hoodie, and the distinctive pink skull became a favorite among many fans.
She has certainly made a name for herself. In the 2026 edition of the Sanrio Character Ranking, Kuromi achieved the fourth place in popularity, remaining among the top five most-voted characters of the company. Her popularity also allowed her to star in the animated shorts Kuromi’s Pretty Journey in 2023 and 2024, as well as share the screen with her eternal rival in My Melody & Kuromi, the stop-motion animation series released on Netflix in July 2025.
On top of that, in October 2025 she officially debuted as a musical artist under the name KUROMI, through the TOY’S FACTORY label. Now she will make the leap to cinemas with her first feature film, although there are still no news about an international release. Sanrio assured that it will share information about other countries and territories once distribution plans are confirmed.
Do you think Kuromi will shine on her own on the big screen, or would it be a waste not to include My Melody so they can fight again like in the old days?
