Uma Musume seiyuu’s physique criticized, fans defend her

Chisa Kimura, the voice of Daiwa Scarlet, received unpleasant comments about her appearance after participating in an official Uma Musume broadcast.

Some internet users seem to expect voice actors not only to do their job well but also to meet certain beauty standards. Seiyuu Chisa Kimura, known for voicing Daiwa Scarlet in Uma Musume: Pretty Derby, became the target of unpleasant comments about her appearance after appearing in an official Uma Musume broadcast. However, many fans quickly came to her defense, reminding others that her body should not be criticized.

The controversy started after her appearance on PakaLive TV on October 24, where she joined other voice actresses to showcase new game updates. While many fans celebrated seeing her on camera again, some social media users began questioning her physical appearance changes, even suggesting she should lose weight before public events.

These comments prompted a response from other fans, who found it particularly distasteful to judge a professional whose work is primarily performance-based. Several reminded that Kimura has publicly discussed her health struggles, weight fluctuations, and potential medication effects.

Following the outpouring of support, Kimura posted a message on her social media on October 25 to reassure her followers. Instead of engaging with critics, she thanked those who supported her and confirmed she was doing well.

“I’m fine, so please don’t worry. Thank you all. I love you,” the seiyuu wrote in Japanese. She also shared an English message thanking international fans for their encouraging words from around the world.

Chisa Kimura has voiced Daiwa Scarlet since Uma Musume’s early days, appearing in both the animated adaptations and Cygames’ popular game. During the recent broadcast, she also celebrated a new outfit for her character, which was added to the game on October 26.

This incident reignited discussions about the physical expectations some fans impose on Japanese voice actors, especially as they increasingly appear in concerts, streams, and promotional events. While these appearances are part of their professional duties, it doesn’t mean their bodies should be subjected to ridicule every time they’re on camera.

Do you think some fans are demanding too much from Japanese voice actors, or has this type of appearance-based commentary crossed a line that should never be tolerated?
