Publisher EXNOA, which oversees DMM Games, recently announced that their upcoming free-to-play RPG Dot Abyss surpassed 200,000 pre-registrations just five days after its official reveal on April 14. Created as the inaugural project by Kumasan Black, a fresh sub-division of the company’s Studio Kumasan, the game blends SNES-style retro visuals with bishojo aesthetics, albeit with a bold and daring approach.
According to Kumasan Black’s representative director Yudai Hasegawa in a conversation with Famitsu, while the heroines join the protagonist on adventures and battles, they all hold roles as brothel workers in the R-rated edition of Dot Abyss. And yes, the game features explicit “intense bedroom scenes.”
Dot Abyss’ gameplay revolves around hack-and-slash mechanics and treasure hunt-style item gathering. Players venture into the “Great Hole,” a colossal abyss at the world’s center, while protecting their frontline bases from lethal “calamities” that emerge from it. However, as Hasegawa pointed out, the game’s standout feature is its brothel setting.
“We selected brothels as our theme for a specific reason. Some characters are employed there against their will, while others may have chosen to work there. As I’ve said before, Kumasan Black strives to produce ‘truly boundary-pushing’ works, and that’s precisely where Dot Abyss finds its edge. Every character works at the brothel for personal reasons, and I aimed to showcase a different facet of that world through a gritty presentation.”
Indeed, Hasegawa’s comments align with the fact that Kumasan Black was recently formed as Studio Kumasan’s daring new label focused on creating “highly erotic games.” To emphasize their commitment to adult content, Kumasan Black reportedly assembled a specialized team to produce and animate Dot Abyss’ bedroom scenes, pouring considerable production resources into crafting a “meticulous” final product. That said, Dot Abyss will be available in both an X-rated version and an all-ages edition, where the brothel is substituted with a tavern.
Dot Abyss is slated for release on PC (Browser/Windows) and mobile platforms (DDM GAMES STORE/App Store/Google Play).
