After debuting in the United States at the beginning of April, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie began its theatrical run in Japan starting April 24, and it appears that the local version features significant variations in dialogue. In a conversation with Crank In, Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto detailed how the follow-up to 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie differs in its Japanese adaptation and the reasoning behind his team’s decision to alter their approach to the film’s screenplay.

“Given that this is a project developed collaboratively in Japan and the US, we didn’t want the Japanese version to merely be a localization of the English script; we aimed to authentically write and construct it in Japanese,” Miyamoto states. While the initial Mario film was created concurrently in English and Japanese, the expertise gained from that process enabled Nintendo and Illumination to adopt a distinct strategy this time around. Consequently, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie was first produced in English and then fully “reimagined” in Japanese.

“Makoto Ueda from the theater troupe Europe Kikaku, who oversaw the Japanese screenplay, is someone I’ve known for years. I wanted Mario and his friends to converse with the natural dialogue found in their stage works, but localization often disrupts the flow of conversations. Humor varies between Japan and other regions, so we strived to make the dialogue as natural as possible,” Miyamoto elaborates.

Although the first Mario movie also featured some improvisation in its Japanese adaptation, the voice actors were typically required to stick to the original material. However, for the new film, Miyamoto reveals that the production crew directed the actors to “use the visuals as a foundation to craft something engaging in Japanese,” motivating them to improvise freely. “Since we recorded the scenes with improvisation permitted and then polished them afterward, there’s a great deal of attention to detail in the final version,” Miyamoto adds.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is currently playing in cinemas across the US and Japan. Upcoming digital streaming dates and platforms have not yet been announced.
