If you grew up watching animation in the 90s, get ready for a direct blast of pure nostalgia. The legendary mercenary capable of swallowing a wrench to materialize a high-tech cannon is back. Producer Hakuhodo DY Music & Pictures officially announced the development of EAT-MAN The Over Order, an entirely new animated project that will revive the legendary franchise by Akihito Yoshitomi.

This new installment won’t function as a remake or a direct continuation of previous productions, but as a completely fresh approach within the franchise. The most interesting part of the announcement is that the original creator of the work, Akihito Yoshitomi, will personally handle writing the scripts from scratch and designing the visual concepts. The project’s direction will be handled by Shunji Oga at Studio Cab, while Satoshi Hirayama will adapt the designs for animation.

To complete the nostalgic move, voice actor Masashi Ebara will reprise the silent protagonist Bolt Crank, repeating the role he took on nearly three decades ago in the original adaptations. Ebara himself expressed his joy at reuniting with the character after so long, highlighting the opportunity to convey the mercenary’s serene gaze on humanity to a new generation of viewers. Although the production hasn’t revealed the release date or the rest of the cast yet, the first promotional trailer already shows our hero devouring metal to reconstruct heavy weaponry from his right hand.

About Eat-Man

Created by Akihito Yoshitomi, the original Eat-Man manga was published between 1996 and 2002 in the pages of Monthly Shonen Advance magazine, accumulating a total of nineteen compiled volumes. The story follows the adventures of Bolt Crank, a mysterious mercenary who possesses the strange ability to consume any type of object or metal and instantly recreate it as a functional tool or weapon. The franchise inspired two TV series aired in 1997 and 1998, as well as a manga sequel titled Eat-Man The Main Dish that was serialized between 2014 and 2019.

Did you watch the 90s animated adaptations, or will this be your first introduction to the world of Bolt Crank?
