Fantia bows to the law: Will require extreme censorship on all adult content
The popular subscription platform announced extreme editing measures that will affect both new illustrations and those published years ago.
20 May 2026
The ongoing battle between creative freedom and obscenity laws in Japan has just claimed a new massive victim. Fantia, the huge creator support platform operated by Toranoana, has just released a statement that left thousands of illustrators stunned. Starting 25 May 2026, the site will implement an extremely strict censorship policy for all mature content. This decision wasn’t taken lightly but is a direct response to severe warnings and constant pressure from Japanese authorities to comply with Article 175 of the Penal Code.

A monumental retroactive problem for creators
The new rules leave no room for interpretation. From now on, censorship mosaics must be applied so that the original textures and shapes are completely unrecognizable. Any attempt at subtle editing, such as using translucent mosaics, light blurring, or simple black lines covering only part of the image, will be considered a direct violation. The most concerning issue for the artist community is that this policy is retroactive. This means creators are forced to manually review and re-edit years of illustrations in their galleries, facing an enormous workload in a very short period.

The legal crackdown tightens further
The platform was very clear about the consequences of ignoring this warning. Any illustration or video not meeting the new opacity standards will face a correction request, immediate removal, or permanent file deletion. If the artist refuses to cooperate, their fan club will be frozen or closed permanently, and in severe cases, Fantia will hand over account records directly to the police. The official statement explicitly warned users to stop relying on their own judgment about what they consider acceptable, as thinking “this should be fine” carries a high risk under the current government surveillance climate.
This drastic measure reflects the immense pressure digital platforms in Japan face to align with laws many consider outdated for the internet age. Knowing artists must modify hundreds of old files to avoid losing income, do you think these strict Japanese censorship laws will ultimately strangle the adult content industry, or will creators find new alternatives abroad to publish their work without such restrictions?
